Transfers

Nowadays, when an artist expresses himself by means of photography, he doesn’t need any legitimation for it. From Pawlok’s experimental handling of processes, techniques and image carrier media, a pictorial substantiveness that doesn’t need visual correspondance within reality, to say which doesn’t search for a copy, emerges. With the transfers, the photographer becomes a painter. Faces and flowers are the most prevalent subjects. A large format polaroid, which is transferred to a heavy, rough-textured hand made paper or canvas by a complex transformation process, provides the motif. The well-calculated exchange of the photochemical layer simultaneously sums up with the amalgam of coincidence.

Here, Pawlok is a painter and alchemist at the same time. Due to their so thoroughly induced metamorphosis into a new and singular pictorial space, the results of this manipulation could easily be named transmutations. Whithin the peculiar profoundness these works eradiate, the developing process seems to continue to have an effect. Their materiality reminds of an artistic principle of modernity which doesn’t make use of pictorial means solely in order to express, but elevates them to be the purpose themselves.

Transfers

Wenn sich ein Künstler heute im Medium Fotografie ausdrückt, so bedarf es hierfür keiner Legitimation. In Pawloks experimentellem Umgang mit Prozesstechnik und Bildträger entsteht eine Bildrealität, die ohne visuelle Entsprechung in einer vorgängigen Wirklichkeit auskommt, also kein Abbild sucht. In den transfers wird der Lichtbildner zum Maler. Gesichter, Blüten sind die häufigsten Sujets. Das Bildmotiv liefert ein großformatiges Polaroid, das in einem aufwendigen Transformationsverfahren auf schweres, raues Büttenpapier oder Leinwand übertragen wird. Der kalkuliert gesteuerte Austausch der photochemischen Schicht rechnet indessen zugleich mit dem Amalgam des Zufalls.

Pawlok ist hier Maler und Alchimist zugleich. Man könnte die Ergebnisse dieser Manipulation mit einigem Recht auch als Transmutationen bezeichnen, so gründlich wird die von außen induzierte Umwandlung zu einem neuen, einzigartigen Bildraum verschmolzen. In der eigentümlichen Tiefe, die diese Arbeiten ausstrahlen, scheint der arkane Entstehungsprozess nachzuwirken. Ihre Stofflichkeit erinnert hingegen an ein künstlerisches Grundprinzip der Moderne, das die malerischen Mittel nicht allein zum Ausdruck nutzt, sondern diese selbst zum Gegenstand erhebt.
