Bilder Leben
by Werner Pawlok
An Anthology from Four Decades of Photography and Art.

"Bilder Leben" is the anthology of photographer and artist Werner Pawlok: an opulent book that brings together his diverse oeuvre in a compact cross-section.  It assembles around 460 images across 252 pages and is released in October 2026 as a hardcover volume in the format 21 × 29.7 cm, designed by Peter Schäfer (PSCD Frankfurt).

A Visual World Between Portrait, Travel, Architecture, and Experiment

The book opens a view onto Pawlok's unmistakable imagery spanning portraiture, travel, architecture, and experimental photography.  His work combines documentary precision with painterly staging: whether iconic personalities, Venetian palaces, Cuban atmospheres, or the poetic interiors of historic greenhouses, Pawlok makes visible how light, color, and materiality generate memory.  His well-known series range from portraits and Stars & Paints to Polaroid transfers, as well as Cuba – expired, Dimore Veneziane, and Greenhouses – Cathedrals for Plants.[1][2][3]

A Workbook Between Photography and Painting

Werner Pawlok does not think of photography as mere representation, but as an artistic space.  With his Photography Paintings and large-format Polaroid transfer processes, he deliberately crosses the boundary between photograph and painting; image supports such as handmade paper, fabric, or canvas become part of the work itself.  In the Polaroid transfers, Pawlok combines painting and photography by transferring large-format Polaroid negatives onto hand-made paper and then finishing them by painting on them.

This openness makes the anthology more than a picture book: it is a walk through more than four decades of artistic curiosity.  Pawlok, born in 1953 in Stuttgart, where he lives and works, has never confined himself to a single technique, aesthetic, or genre—and precisely therein lies the tension of his oeuvre.

For Collectors, Art Lovers, and Discoverers

"Bilder Leben" is aimed at all those who wish to experience Pawlok's visual language in its full breadth: as a portraitist of international personalities, as a sensitive chronicler of places and cultures, and as an experimenter at the threshold of analog and digital photography.  The anthology bundles these facets into a vivid overall picture—intimate, sensuous, and visually dense.
