SICILIA - MOMENTS IN LIGHT
Sicily is not a place one simply travels to. Rather, it is an experience – intense, contradictory, and breathtaking. An island that does not reveal itself right away, but slowly unveils its soul, layer by layer, like a delicately kept, promising secret.
Between Palermo, Trapani, Catania, and Taormina, its complexity reveals itself in entirely different ways: in the pulsating, raw rhythm of Palermo, in the open expanse and clear light of Trapani, in the down-to-earth, austere energy of Catania at the foot of Etna, and in Taormina's almost enraptured view across the sea. In Agrigento, white columns brace themselves against the deep blue sky; in Cefalù, defiant church spires do the same. In Ragusa Ibla and Modica, Baroque lines glow in the light and dazzle across the expanse of the landscape, while in the Val di Noto, the warm air vibrates between almond trees and dry fields. The light reflects, carries images across the land, and shapes the atmosphere of these places in both subtle and powerful ways.
Not only the cities and their architecture, but also their sensual vegetation shapes the image of the island: the silvery shimmering of the olive groves, the deep green of the lemon trees, the bright orange of ripe fruit, the delicate scent of almond blossoms, and the fleeting yellow of mimosas in spring. Inaudible, yet unforgettable.
My journey as a photographer began as a search – for images and visual worlds that speak their own language. Over the years, international work in the realms of fashion, portraiture, and campaigns sharpened my gaze, shaping and refining it. Yet it was truly defined in the stillness and before the wide horizon of independent projects, in my books, where my way of seeing was allowed to detach itself – from constraints, from expectations – and become something entirely of its own.
In works such as »Cuba – expired«, »New Orleans – undercurrent«, or »Dimore Veneziane«, I have repeatedly approached places closely linked to water: cities and spaces shaped by the sea, by rivers or lagoons. Water carries memory within it. It preserves, alters, washes under, and connects. Perhaps it is no coincidence that these places in particular attract me, for they speak of time, of transitions, of a perpetual coming into being and fading away. This engagement has transformed my perspective. The camera increasingly became an instrument of seeing. Not directed at the obvious, but at what lies in between: at light, atmosphere, and the fleeting.
»Sicilia – Augenblicke im Licht« also emerged from this encounter. The title is more than a mere description; it is a leitmotif. The light of Sicily is not a neutral element; it shapes, accentuates, brings things to the fore, and makes them disappear again. It falls through orange groves, refracts in palm trees, rests on the tough leaves of the macchia, and illuminates landscapes and faces alike. My photographs come into being in those fleeting moments when perception condenses. They preserve moments that could otherwise not be captured, unfolding their power in that very way.
My photographs are not documentary portraits, but a personal approach. They carry within them the experiences of my earlier works, while at the same time seeking their own open space. They show fragments, impressions, transitions. Perhaps that is where the enduring core of my work lies: creating images that do not need to explain, but resonate. Opening spaces in which perception is not predetermined, but can unfold freely.
